Where To Stay On Maryland’s Coast

Published On: May 5, 2026

B&Bs, Inns, and Unique Stays in Berlin, Snow Hill, and Pocomoke City.

Most people planning a trip to Maryland’s Coast start in Ocean City. That makes sense.

But Worcester County, Maryland is more than a beach destination.

Behind the shoreline, the county opens into farmland, woodland, tidal wetlands, and marsh. Tucked inside that landscape are some genuinely interesting places to stay.

Berlin, Snow Hill, and Pocomoke City each sit within 30 miles of the ocean, but the experience is entirely different. The pace is slower. The buildings carry more history. The hosts are more likely to leave fresh pasties outside your door than hand you a key card.

Whether you are looking for a grand Victorian bed and breakfast, a riverfront inn, a cabin inside a cypress swamp, or a quiet waterfront cottage with a real story behind it, the options here are worth knowing.

Here is a town-by-town guide to the best B&Bs and unique stays on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, what makes each one worth the drive, who each stay is best for, and what to know before you book.

Berlin, Maryland: Historic Inns and Walkable Charm

Berlin earns its reputation. The historic downtown is compact enough to explore in an afternoon and walkable enough that a car feels optional once you arrive. Independent restaurants, coffee shops, antique dealers, and galleries anchor the main streets, many of them in buildings with their own history.

A growing food and drink scene, including spots like Burley Oak Brewery, has made Berlin a day-trip destination for Ocean City visitors. Staying overnight is a different experience entirely.

The Victorian architecture served as a filming backdrop for Runaway Bride. The Sunday farmers market runs May through October. Annual events include the Peach Festival in August, the Fiddlers Convention in September, and Oktoberfest in October, all of which fill accommodations quickly.

Ocean City is eight miles east. Assateague Island is 10 miles southeast. Berlin works well as a base for exploring the coast, but most guests end up spending more time in town than they expected.

The Inn Berlin

Set on 1.5 acres of mature gardens on one of the highest points in historic Berlin, The Inn Berlin is a grand Victorian estate that pairs original architectural detail with modern luxury.

Five spacious guest rooms feature private en-suite baths, organic linens, king or queen beds, and a complimentary gourmet breakfast. The property also operates Boulangerie Berlin, an on-site bakery, so the smell of fresh pastry is part of the experience.

The Inn hosts weddings and private events, offers curated add-on packages, and has become one of the more sought-after anniversary and honeymoon destinations in Worcester County. Summer and fall weekends book early.

Best for: romantic getaways, honeymoons, food-focused travelers, anyone looking for a full-service boutique B&B

Holland House Bed and Breakfast

Holland House has been a family-owned bed and breakfast since 1986. Originally opened by Jim and Jan Quick, the property is now run by their daughter Hattie and her husband Jacob, who took over in 2024 and introduced modern touches like self check-in while keeping the warmth intact.

The home itself is a turn-of-the-century doctor’s residence, full of the quiet character that builds over decades.

The wraparound front porch is where most mornings begin. It is the kind of place you settle in with a coffee before walking the four blocks to downtown Berlin. The back patio has a fire pit. There is an outdoor shower for post-beach days. Continental breakfast is served at 8:30 a.m., and coffee is available throughout the day.

Best for: couples, repeat visitors, travelers who prioritize walkability and character

The Atlantic Hotel

The Atlantic Hotel has anchored Berlin’s Main Street since 1895. Staying here puts you in the center of town, steps from restaurants, live music, and the historic storefronts that define Berlin’s character.

Rooms reflect the hotel’s long history, with a mix of traditional charm and updated comforts. The experience is as much about the setting as it is the stay.

Best for: travelers who want to walk everywhere and experience Berlin’s Main Street from the inside

Snow Hill, Maryland: Riverfront History and a Quieter Pace

Snow Hill sits along the Pocomoke River and carries its history lightly. The downtown has Colonial-era architecture, independent shops, and a layout that rewards walking. Furnace Town Historic Site sits just outside town and is one of the more underrated living history destinations on the Eastern Shore.

The river is the centerpiece. Snow Hill draws paddlers, birdwatchers, and anyone looking for a reason to slow down.

Cypress River Inn and Spa

This is a property with a story worth knowing before you arrive.

The building at 201 East Market Street is the 1860 home of George Washington Purnell, a Gothic Revival structure listed on the National Register of Historic Places and considered one of Maryland’s most detailed examples of that style.

The property is being restored as a boutique inn, spa, and restaurant destination by owners with deep local roots. The inn features four Manor House Suites and five private cottages.

A restaurant, Chateau Le Mere, is planned with a focus on French-inspired, farm-to-table cuisine, along with a full cocktail program. Spa services are also part of the experience.

For a riverfront retreat with architectural history, this is one of the more distinctive properties on the Eastern Shore.

Note: Cypress River Inn and Spa is opening in phases. Rooms may be available, while the restaurant and spa are expected to follow. Check directly with the property for current availability before booking.

Best for: romantic getaways, architecture enthusiasts, spa-focused travelers, and anyone looking for a riverfront stay

Pocomoke City, Maryland: Cabins, Vacation Rentals, and the Cypress Forest

Pocomoke City is known as the Friendliest Town on the Eastern Shore, and its location reflects that. The Pocomoke River corridor is home to the northernmost bald cypress swamp on the East Coast.

The landscape here feels different.

Spring brings nesting warblers and wildflowers along the river.
Summer is for kayaking, fishing, and long afternoons on the water.
Fall turns the cypress gold and draws paddlers from across the region.
Winter strips the canopy back and reveals a quieter side of the forest.

This is not a traditional bed and breakfast destination. It is a nature-first stop, and the accommodations reflect that.

Pocomoke River State Park

Shad Landing sits four miles from Snow Hill along the Pocomoke River and offers campsites along with eight mini cabins tucked into the forest.

The cabins are simple by design, with bunk beds, a full-size bed, and basic furnishings. What they offer is location. You wake up inside the cypress swamp, with kayak rentals, a swimming pool, a camp store, river access, and hiking trails steps away.

It is one of the closest experiences to full forest immersion on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

Best for: outdoor families, nature-focused travelers, campers who want a roof over their heads

Vacation Rentals Near Pocomoke City

The Pocomoke area has a growing inventory of vacation rentals that offer more space and privacy than a traditional inn. These properties work well for families, groups, or anyone who wants a kitchen and room to spread out.

Search by Pocomoke City, Snow Hill, or Berlin, MD to explore current availability. Inventory changes frequently, so early booking is recommended for peak travel dates.

A Waterfront Stay Near Berlin Worth Knowing

Not every stay fits inside a downtown. About four miles from Ocean City and one mile from Ocean Downs Casino, tucked along a quiet stretch of Turville Creek, is one of the more distinctive properties in the region.

The Inn on Turville Creek

Six one-bedroom waterfront cottage suites sit directly on Turville Creek, overlooking the historic Riddle Farm, where Man o’ War and War Admiral once trained.

Each cottage includes a queen bed, sleeper sofa, kitchenette, and a private porch facing the water. A seasonal pool is located at the main house.

It is quieter here than anywhere on the Ocean City strip, and that is the point. You are still 20 minutes from the boardwalk, eight miles from Assateague, and a short drive from Berlin’s restaurants and breweries.

Paddleboards launch from the dock. Kayak rentals and a public boat ramp are nearby. Sunset over the creek is the kind of moment that slows everything down.

This is a vacation rental property rather than a traditional B&B, with no breakfast included, but the setting and history are hard to find elsewhere in the region.

Best for: couples, small groups, and travelers looking for waterfront access without the Ocean City crowds

Before You Book

A few practical notes that will save you time:

  • Berlin fills quickly for major events such as the Peach Festival, Fiddlers Convention, and Oktoberfest. Book two to three months in advance
  • Most Berlin B&Bs require a two-night minimum on weekends from May through October
  • The Inn on Turville Creek books quickly for summer and anniversary weekends
  • Cypress River Inn and Spa is opening in phases. Confirm current availability before planning around specific amenities
  • Pocomoke River State Park cabins are simple but consistently well-reviewed. Bring your own bedding or sleeping pad

Snow Hill and Pocomoke City are both within 30 miles of Ocean City and offer a quieter base for exploring Assateague Island, Furnace Town, and the surrounding Eastern Shore.
